Seize The Leash - Canine Life and Social Skills Program
C.L.A.S.S. is an educational
program designed to promote training focusing on the use of positive
reinforcement and to strengthen relationships between humans and their canine
companions. The mission of C.L.A.S.S. is to promote positive relationships
through positive training methods. This approach both develops and safeguards
harmonious relationships by maintaining trust and mutual respect.
Developed by the Association
of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), the C.L.A.S.S. program is designed to benefit pet
owners and their canine companions, dog trainers and others who work with dogs,
animal shelters, and the community overall. In a series of real-life activities
through which an owner accompanies his dog, C.L.A.S.S. Evaluators will assess a
dog/owner team’s core training skills, with options to test advanced training
skills. There are three C.L.A.S.S. levels: the Bachelor’s (B.A.), Master’s
(M.A.), and Doctorate (Ph.D.). Successfully completing each C.L.A.S.S. level is
like earning an academic degree in real-life skills with your dog.
Bachelors (BA) Obedience Training
This is an introductory dog obedience class for dogs five months of age and older. It’s never too late to late for you and your dog to learn basic obedience, and this class is the perfect way to start! Here are some of the key commands and concepts you and your dog will learn in this fun and interactive class:
- Warm Up -- Showing a dog how to investigate a new situation comfortably and potty on command.
- Loose Leash Walking -- Most pet owners really appreciate a dog that walks nicely on a leash without pulling. Positive training and proper equipment is key.
- Attention -- Teaches your dog to pay attention to you and not be bounding off after squirrels or cats.
- Wait at the door -- The ability to maintain position at the door until invited to move through the door.
- Meet and Greet -- The importance of having your dog wait comfortably at your side while you chat with a friend - with or without another dog present -shows the dog self-control and patience.
- Leashing Up Manners -- Teaches your dog to sit quietyly until released while you put on or take off his leash.
- Leave it -- Refers to his muzzle; learn to put his attention back on you and away from something else that he is interested in.
- Come -- Probably the most critical command to teach but can be started at an early age. This command provides a great opportunity to bond with your dog!
- Wait for the food bowl -- Rather then grabbing for or rushing for the food bowl, this shows the dog's self control around a very valuable resource.
- Stay -- Stay means don't move a muscle until I release you. This command can save a dog's life.
- Settle -- A dog who can calm down on cue is more welcome in society and other's homes.
- Give and Take -- A dog who will willingly give up valued toys or food to anyone is a dog you would trust around your children.
This is a six week class, with one-hour sessions one day a week for the duration. Class sizes are limited to four dogs, and the fee is $120 for each six week class.
Masters (MA) Obedience Training
We really get down to business in this class! This is great fun for all of our Bacherlor level graduates! We will cover more advanced topics of dog obedience, encouraging both dog and owner to continue the journey of disciplined learning. Here is a sample of key commands and concepts covered in our Manners II class:
- Wait in the car- Having problems with your dog wanting to leap out into traffic?
- Pass by other dogs -- Dogs nearby? No problem after learning this!
- Wait at the door with Distractions -- Can you carry a bag of groceries, push the baby carriage and open the door easily all why having your dog on a leash?
- Warm up time with distractions - while you are out of sight, builds confidence.
- Leashing up manners with distractions (toys or children nearby and the door open).
- Sit, Down and Stand for physical evaluation, vet visits, grooming and meeting new people.
- Recall -- in-sight and out of sight with many distractions.
- Handling - Awkward petting, pulling ears, picking up paws by owner and strangers.
- Stay with distractions
- Loose leash walking in the real world
- Leave it with food, toys and other dogs.
- Touch - Using this behavior to play games and tricks.
