Treat the "cause" and the "symptoms" magically disappear. This is as true in dog behavior training as it is in medicine, especially holistic medicine. The "cause" with inappropriate dog behaviors is a miscommunication between humans and dogs. The "symptoms" can be anything from barking incessantly to chewing up the house when the human is at work for the day. Dogs rarely have all the symptoms of this miscommunication, most commonly it's just two or three problem areas. You could have the most perfectly obedient dog, even trained in agility or flyball, but she could still be unbalanced when someone knocks at the door, or another dog crosses her path. It is essential to demonstrate leadership to your dog because they are not humans, but "pack animals". Pack animals have a different set of rules and expectations then humans do. Approximately 20 years ago, I discovered the main cause of my migraines - sugar consumption. I haven't consciously consumed sugar in any form in those 20 years and I only have a migraine when I accidentally eat something with sugar in it. This is exactly what I see with owners who learn how to communicate with their dog and take on the role of pack leader with all it's responsibilities. The "symptoms" the dog was exhibiting disappear almost magically. Become your dogs' pack leader in all areas, and most of the "symptoms" will disappear. It will take a bit of time and effort, and your dog will test you a few times until the symptoms extinguish, but in the end, you will have a happy calm dog who looks to you for guidance. |
