Seize The Leash Training Tips- The right trainer. Many average trainers teach “average group classes,” charge you an “average price” and have, well... average skills and knowledge about dogs, training, behavior modification and canine psychology. Most owners don’t know any better or they don’t really care about these facts. They just settle for average trainer and end up with “average results” or even worse—NO RESULTS! So who emerges from the pack? There is an amazing energy and spirit about these individuals which you'll notice right away that goes far beyond dog training. The ones who stand out from the pack are truly unique in every aspect you can imagine. These individuals love what they do. This is why it's so hard to get a hold of them and as Dr. Phil would say, "They don't have a free hand to throw a rock." They're too busy making a difference and often have a waiting list. They are busy teaching, training, conducting seminars, promoting themselves, their products, or their book. Sometimes they are busy training “others” to follow their footsteps and carry on the torch. When put to the test, most of these experts possess these ten qualities that other dog trainers just don’t’ have: Those that truly CARE not only will get back to you, but often try to reach you immediately. They know that you may need help right away! Pick up the phone or e-mail some trainers. You'll soon find out that most dog trainers leave you hanging and you start to grow gray hair waiting for a call back or an e-mail response.Whether it’s on the phone or in person, smart trainers usually answer your tough questions with patience and respect. They don't mind or get offended by how much you challenge their knowledge or expertise. 2. Their Training Method Is Backed by Common Sense When in doubt, always ask yourself: Does this seem rational? Am I getting anywhere with this? Are people going to laugh at me when they see me trying this method with my dog? Observe it with an open mind and maybe TRY it first and then be the judge. That is the beauty of being “Diverse.” Once you try something, then you can be certain whether it did or did not work for you and your dog. Otherwise, you are just relying on assumptions instead of relying on facts. The same rule applies if you are instructed by your private trainer. If you saw it on television, were told by your “group class trainer,” or even if you heard it from someone with a PhD. You need to stop and ask yourself: Is their training method or philosophy logical and practical? Be smart about it and don't let others brainwash you into trying methods that are irrational. Effective trainers don't mind asking you, "Does this make sense to you?" or "Do you see the logic behind what we are trying to accomplish here?" Again, if it doesn't make any sense, please don't make a fool out of yourself. 3. They Have an Uncanny Ability to Pay Attention to Details Hiring an expert that offers private lessons is the only way you'll be able to ask questions that pertain "specifically" to you and your needs. Top experts know the one-on-one approach is THE BEST and quickest way to get maximum results. That’s why they swear by it. Bottom line, by working in private, your trainer will get to see things from both your and your dog's perspective. 4. They Will Make Sure You Don't End Up With a "Half-Trained" Dog This means their method will be practical. Remember, your training technique has to work anywhere and anytime or else you're wasting your time. Unless their training philosophy is the "real deal," you are setting yourself and your poor dog up for a disaster. Allow me to clarify. These trainers will make SURE that your dog is not just another “Half-trained Dog.” So if you have a half-trained dog, it probably means you've been wasting your time and money with the wrong method, or the wrong classes and trainer. Oh, one more thing. You need to be sure that YOU are dedicated to your dog’s training too. You don’t want to be the one that’s only “half-trained.” 5. Their Training Method Even Works from a Distance and Off-Leash Only a few owners and trainers get to this level. Your goal should be to eventually have COMPLETE CONTROL of your dog without having him leashed. Your dog should obey from across the room, across the street, in the backyard, front yard and even from a distance, using your normal tone of voice. That’s right, I said your VOICE, not screaming from the top of your lungs. 6. Your Dog's Age NEVER Matters to Them Topnotch dog trainers are skilled, versatile and welcome the challenge of working with ANY dog. Stubborn or dominant dogs are no different. It doesn't really matter to them if your dog is labeled as aggressive, un-trainable, red zone, or even hopeless. They are willing to accept the risks and give you and your dog an honest chance. Some trainers simply refuse to work with challenging breeds. 7. They Gladly Accept Even Hard-to-Train Breeds Topnotch dog trainers are skilled, versatile and welcome the challenge of working with ANY dog. 8. Their Method Should Be Firm AND Kind Let's face it; no parent can ever raise a child properly without being both firm and kind. Firm alone may get you some results, but adding "kind" is what makes the relationship loving and healthy. Holding tightly onto your dog's leash for the rest of your life isn't training, that's just restraining and any moron can do that. Do you want to train your dog or restrain it? That's what I thought. You'll always know when you see a true pro. They make working with dogs seem so easy, that you’d swear they could do it blindfolded. Your dog will obey them without any yelling or the need of much physical force. Plus they will be able to teach you how to achieve the same results. 9. They Let You Experiment with the Use of Different Training Tools These trainers will let you try different training tools to find that one tool that will get your dog’s attention. They use every “weapon” they can get their hands on to make sure you are able to control your dog in ANY situation. Getting real and long-term results is their main objective! They think outside the box and adapt their training to meet the needs of you and your dog. "Diverse Trainers" know from experience that there isn't that "one magic tool" that works on every dog, every time. Through trial and error they make sure what works today, also does tomorrow! 10. They Rarely Give Up and Follow a "Diverse Method"
